I have now installed the self fabricated start and choke cables. They do look like the originals and were the last components to be attached on the instrument panel.

Start And Choke Cables

The original Singer start and choke cables have a 1/2 inch installation hole on the instrument panel. I could not find any generic cables that would have this installation hole size, they all seem to be for a smaller hole and also for a thinner panel. Therefore I decided to fabricate new bezels to the cables to make the cable suitable for 1/2 inch holes and have a long enough thread to go through the instrument panel. It also made possible to reproduce the original bezel size and shape to make the cables look like the originals.
I turned the new bezels from solid stainless steel, polished the bezel and then attached modified generic cables into them. I removed the plastic knob from the generic cable and threaded the cable end to accept the new fabricated knobs. Below are the new bezels in variour stages, the bezel attached to the cable and fabricated cables with an original cable.

After finishing the door upholstery I installed the doors in place already a couple weeks ago. Today I adjusted them properly by adding some shims under a two of the hinges. I also installed the outer door handles. The doors function now very nicely and also close with a nice sound even thoug they are very light because there are no windows on them.

Casting Work

I cast the knobs from polyester resin that was dyed to correct brown color. That did not produce very good results because the resin has so high viscosity that there were constant problems to get the mold filled properly.
Then I tried casting with low viscosity polyurethane resin and that gave very good results. Looks like this is going to work!
Below is the the filled mold with the polyurethane resin components and brown dye, castings removed from the mold, reproduction and the original but which is which?

Mold Making

The Start and Choke knobs on my car had been replaced by some generic non-originals at some point, the two weren't even similar to each other. From the various pictures I have I saw that the original knobs are fairly simple in shape and have text Choke and Start in them. I also found out that reproductions are not available and on the other hand originals, even if found, typically have the cable stuck or broken.
Therefore I decided to try fabricate new knobs myself. First I considered turning them from solid plastic, like POM and paint them in to the correct color. But hot to produce the indented to them? Using etching to create a metal stamp to hot press the text shape in them? Maybe that would work.
But then it struck to me. I could use silicone a mold and pourable plastic molding technique. But how to produce the original, or even better, find an original knob to be used as a pattern. Once again, the help came from the NASOC forum, I got a very generous offer from Mike that he would lend me a pair of original knobs to be used as a pattern. Excellent! Of course I I was very happy about this.

After receiving the knobs from Mike it has took me sime while to get the required materials, learn the technique and eventually create the mold. At this point I have made the silicone mold, and some test castings out from that.

Currently I'm pretty confident of the outcome. More to come...
